Mozart and his brilliant collaborator, librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, based their opera on Pierre Beaumarchais' infamous La folle journée, ou Le Mariage de Figaro—a play banned by King Louis XVI for its depiction of a rebellious servant who ridicules a corrupt aristocracy.
